The ledger. Append-only.

When we are wrong, the correction runs at the top of the next cable, dated, in both languages, stating what was said, what is now believed, and what changed. It is also recorded here. Past cables are dated records of what was believed when they were written; they are never silently edited. A correction is a new dated note, linked from the original.

The box does not run when there is nothing to correct. A weekly ritual of announcing that nothing is wrong trains the reader to skip the one element that must never be skipped.

訂正

台帳。追記のみ。

誤ったときは、次号の冒頭に、日付とともに、両言語で訂正を出す。何を言ったか、いま何を信じているか、何が変わったかを記す。ここにも記録する。過去の公電は、書かれた時点で信じられていたことの、日付つきの記録である。黙って書き換えることはしない。訂正は、元の号から辿れる、新しい日付つきの注記として出す。

訂正すべきものがないときは、欄を出さない。「今週も誤りなし」と毎週唱える儀式は、決して読み飛ばしてはならない一つの要素を、読者に読み飛ばさせる。
